A message for those a part of the community & even those outside of it.
It is 2020. Many would expect Black lives to matter by now, but truthfully, not much has changed since the days of physical enslavement. "History repeats itself and that's just how it goes..." said J. Cole in his song "Fire Squad" & history has done just that. The power of the people is stronger than the people in power. This is easier to see when we UNITE & work collectively towards making change. While it is important for the Black community to do this work, white people and non-Black people of color must use their privilege to not only be an ally, but also an advocate. & for white people specifically, to abolish & revise the system their ancestors put in place.
Riots/protests WORK! It has been shown time & time again how riots and protests bring about change. Some examples are The Stamp Act Riots of 1765, The Boston Tea Party of 1773, The Detroit Riots of 1967, & The LA Riots of 1992. Even If they did not work, it is NOBODY'S place to tell Black people (even if you are Black) how to react towards injustice inflicted upon us. White people, realize your privilege when it comes to riots and protests. There are many undercover white supremacists in positions of power. If you see cops & other officials trying to harm Black people during these events, create a shield because they are extremely less likely to harm you. DO NOT LOOT OR HARM BLACK OWNED BUSINESSES! & please, if your intentions aren't in the right place, stay yo ass at home!
Support & promote Black-owned businesses. While riots & protests are effective, work must be done behind the scenes to bring about well-needed change. Stop giving your money to these white ran, money-hungry companies & corporations. Watch out for businesses like Fashion-Nova & DollsKill that steal from Black & POC designers & creatives. No matter how hard it may be to stop supporting, stand ten toes down & keep the bigger picture in mind. Stand for something or fall for anything. Besides, there are so many fire Black-owned businesses, recognize that & make others recognize as well. The Black community has about $1.1 trillion in spending power, but most of this money is used outside of our community. On average, money only circulates for 6 hours within our community before it leaves & enters a different community (usually the white or Asian community.)
Boycott, boycott, boycott!!! Think back to the Montgomery bus boycott of 1960, which ended successfully. It is time for the Black community to realize how powerful our influence is. Check the morality of these companies, & then act accordingly. It should not be hard to stop supporting those who do not support us.
Break the cycles. Many of us are already doing so, but it is time for us to evolve instead of being weighed down by what was placed upon us by this country. It is time for us to realize how we have been negatively impacted not just physically but also mentally & emotionally & make necessary changes. "Nobody said you had to be gangstas ... read more, learn more, change the globe..." says Nas in his song "I Can." While it is important to notice our conditioning as a community & break free, it is also important to notice how deep this conditioning is rooted & not down or shame our brothers & sisters who have a harder time breaking these cycles. Learn & apply it to your life & try your best to educate others, but also keep an understanding heart. To white people, use your privilege to break the cycles in your own community & teach your children about their privilege.
Unite & fight back! Stand on the statement that ALL Black lives matter. This includes Black women, Black men, Black children, gay/lesbian/bisexual/asexual/transgender/queer Black people, poor Black people, disabled Black people, & mentally ill Black people. This is a requirement in being pro-Black. If you can't fight for all of us, you can't fight for any of us. Realize that despite our differences, we have at least one thing in common ... being mistreated & murdered because of the color of our skin. We are much more powerful standing together than we are standing alone, & realizing this is a vital element of change. If you see a Black person being handled wrongfully by a cop, please step up & help! Too many times where we just stood & recorded while a Black person was being beaten or killed. Turn your fear into passion, we're already dying. Peace does not work when the language of our oppressors is violence. White people, again, use your privilege to help us in matters of life or death.
There are many ways you can help the Black community, these are just a few that I feel are super important. Enough is enough. It is time for us to take a stand & create change, even if it means we have to burn shit down first. In which we have a right, since our ancestors built & even fought for this country for free, yet we still have not received any reparations. It is time for us to fight for our ancestors, ourselves, our children, & future generations to come. Do your part.
