LGBTQ+ History IS Black History

Writer's picture: Black MulanBlack Mulan

So recently there's been a post going around on social media about schools looking into teaching LGBTQ+ history, and a lot of Black people have been shutting it completely down. I can understand some of the frustration, but with that frustration comes lack of knowledge and understanding. Things being said like "How is it ok to teach kids about gay history when we don't even learn enough Black history" or "STOP TRYING TO FORCE THIS SHIT ON US/KIDS" etc etc etc.

This blog post isn't going to be long, because honestly there isn't much to explain. LGBTQ+ history IS Black history. That "gay shit" is not automatically equivalent to "white people shit." Do you know how many Black revolutionaries were queer? James Baldwin. Langston Hughes. Alice Walker. Shit, the Black Lives Matter movement ITSELF! All fought for Black lives and rights.

Many of us, of course, didn't know that. But how could we? Really, Black people can be the most homophobic out of everyone. I understand, with our history and all, but the same people we spit on and consider less than are the same ones who fought for our Black asses to be able to do what we can today. You CANNOT be pro Black and exclude queer Blacks or transgender Blacks. We are all one.

P.S. here's some pics of the Black revolutionaries I spoke of just in case you have no idea who I'm speaking of.

Mr. James Baldwin

Mr. Langston Hughes

Ms. Alice Walker
